Open year-round, Haystack Reservoir is a man-made, 233 acre body of water in the high desert. It is located 8 miles south of Madras, OR, 2 miles off of US-97. The campsite sits adjacent to the Crooked River National Grasslands.
Follow )R-22 SE and US-20 E 109 miles to OR-126 E in Sisters. Continue on OR-126 E to US-97 N, 24 miles. After 11.6 miles, turn right onto SW Jerico Lane. The campground/boat launch entrance is 6 miles further down the road.
The club stays at the East Shore campground, which is first-come-first-served before Memorial Day. Only limited sites are compatible with larger RVs and trailers.
Besides rainbow trout, Haystack has largemouth bass and kokanee. In the spring ODFW will plant steelhead as well.
Stripping wooly buggers and streamers with an intermediate line is the most common technique. Indicator fishing with balanced leeches and chironomids can also be effective.
