Detroit Lake is a reservoir impounded by the Detroit Dam on the North Santiam River 46 miles southeast of Salem. Located at an elevation of 1,569 feet. Water levels fluctuate considerably during the seasons, but the average size is 3,500 acres.

Drive east on OR-22 SE for 45 miles. Turn into the Mongold Wayside Entrance. There is a day-use parking fee that requires a card.

The Mongold Wayside has two launches. The club uses the smaller one on the left.
Fishing

The lake is stocked with rainbow trout and kokanee, though there are opportunities to catch large mouth bass as well.
Detroit also hosts a 3 day derby in mid-May for which the lake is heavily stocked with trophy trout.
Fly Fishing Techniques
Fly Fishing Techniques
Fly fishing is most effective in the spring and summer along the edges of the lake. Club members have had consistant success fishing the island--a moderate row. Target deeper water levels with Type 3 to Type 6 full-sink lines. Effective flies include woolly buggers, nymphs, and midge pupa.
